Where to See Flamingos on Bonaire
Bonaire is one of the best-known islands for Caribbean flamingos. The birds use salt pans, lagoons, and protected wetlands across the island, and their image is closely tied to Bonaire’s identity.
Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary
Pekelmeer is an important breeding sanctuary in the southern salt works. The protected colony itself is closed to visitors. Flamingos must be observed from public roads and lawful viewpoints outside the sanctuary, usually with binoculars or a telephoto lens.
Gotomeer and Washington Slagbaai
Gotomeer is a saltwater lagoon near Washington Slagbaai National Park and has a public overlook. It can offer more approachable viewing than distant Pekelmeer, though numbers still vary. Additional wetlands inside the national park may hold birds depending on current conditions.
Early morning and late afternoon often provide comfortable temperatures and good light. Remain well back, do not stop vehicles where unsafe, and never walk into salt pans. Flamingos are wary and disturbance can interrupt feeding or breeding.
The Tourism Corporation Bonaire provides official Gotomeer visitor information. Bonaire’s flamingo overview explains the different viewing areas and the sanctuary’s access restrictions.
